Ulmer industries furnished the collapsible platforms for the Sprinter Light Rail System in North San Diego County. In all, over 100 actuated platforms were installed to facilitate boarding the passenger train. The gangway is then raised to allow for freight trains to pass thru the station.
Because freight trains share the same track, the SPRINTER platforms had to be set back from the tracks to provide enough room for employees riding on the sides of freight cars. Freight trains do not run during passenger operations.
The gangways were designed into the station to fold up after end of service to allow the BNSF freight trains plus employees at their sides to pass through.
